NJ/NY Gotham FC vs North Carolina Carolina Courage, Saturday, April 22 at Red Bull Arena, for SEASON Zine.

Late on a stormy night in New Jersey last weekend, Lynn Williams scored her 60th career NWSL goal to punctuate the emerging narrative of a reinvigoated Gotham FC that will surely have more to say in this year's competition than it did in 2022.

The story of women's football has had a strong European inflection of late. No doubt, many of the best players and teams now play on the continent, spurred on by record-breaking crowds, filling stadiums for club and international competitions alike. Across the Atlantic, though, the first month of the 2023 NWSL season is now played, and some interesting storylines have emerged, all the more compelling ahead of the World Cup this summer. The league is in the midst of necessary evolution, shaped in part by urgent reforms and initiatives to ensure accountability and promote equity; as well as by expansion that has brought a new generation of leaders—on and off the pitch—who are embracing the project of authentically building and representing the communities that support them. The transformation of Gotham FC—a 2021 rebranding of the languishing Sky Blue FC—has been one of this season’s most intriguing developments. Their win last weekend was their third of the season, just one fewer than their total in 2022. The team is stacked with international talents that will be endeavoring to secure their places on World Cup rosters. And, off the field, the organization has made some interesting moves, announcing an all-woman executive leadership team that has already begun reimagining how it engages supporters. From pre-match catwalk videos to players making outreach calls directly to supporters, Gotham FC seems to be refocusing on fun. The vibes are strong with the Bats.
